BIOGRAPHY
Hey there. I'm Jenny. I make music with my husband Tyler. It all started back at the
University of Delaware. Yes, I'm being serious, Delaware. During my first weekend at
school, I decided to take a bus to church. I stepped on the bus and sat next to a friend.
Before I knew it, Tyler, who was sitting in front of us, turned around and introduced
himself. I thought he was really cute. We talked for a few minutes; he turned back
around, and sadly soon after forgot my name. I, however, could not forget his. I saw him
in the dining hall a few weeks later and we spoke again. Tyler was the music coordinator
for the campus ministry that I happened to get involved with. We started leading worship
together, eating omelets every Tuesday and Thursday morning, and writing songs. We
spent the first year singing together in the stairwells of the student center. The acoustics
were incredible. Sometime that fall we started dating and well, as they say, the rest is
history.
Life with Tyler is interesting because we're so different from each other. Tyler says
things like "dude," and "stoked," while I have a laid back way of speaking and tend to
drop my g's. He grew up listening to jazz music and refined classical compositions while
my family listened to Ricky Skaggs and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Tyler lived in the
same house until he went to college whereas I'd lived in six different states and two
countries before moving into my dorm freshman year. Tyler is the life of a party; I have
to muster up every ounce of courage possible to talk to people I don't know. I think that
our differences are part of what make us a great team. Tyler pushes me to try new things
and I keep him somewhat grounded. Our different musical backgrounds inspire us to
create new music. If it weren't for Tyler, I'd probably be writing cheesy country songs
and he'd be a virtual Jack Johnson impersonator.
In November of 2010 we released an album called Faint Not. While we released two
full-length records prior to Faint Not, the record felt like our first professional, cohesive
release. We toured Faint Not for a year and a half, finding ourselves in colleges,
churches, and living rooms. Sara Groves invited us to join their Reason to Gather
tour last fall and we couldn’t help look at each other almost every night, smiling and
saying, "How did we get here? Is this real life?!"
We quickly realized that the success of the record propelled us into the busiest season
of our life together. Weariness set in and we found ourselves in desperate need of rest,
both physical and spiritual. In the midst of the busyness we penned the songs for Open
Your Doors, which released on April 3rd, 2012. The record is meant to chronicle the
past year of our life on the road, from our strivings and shortcomings to our ultimate
need to rest and abide in Christ. The title, Open Your Doors, comes from the bridge of
the second track, Abide. The bridge pleads, "Open up your doors, oh my heart and soul.
Open up your doors. Let the King come in." We hope that the record will serve as an
encouragement to listener to open their hearts up to the Lord and find rest in His abiding
love.
We plan to spend most of the summer preparing for what looks to be an exciting fall.
We’re looking forward to playing the Lifelight Festival and hitting the road again with
Sara Groves and Bebo Norman in October and November to support of Open Your Doors. We’re also very excited to partner with the International Justice Mission, a
organization that works hard to combat human trafficking and modern day slavery.
